The boy was born without the label which is the mark of magic. He also forbids him to go into town. He considers Masha’s teenage years to be going well, apart from some ridiculous behavior. The boy is obedient, kind, helps his grandfather in everything, and it does not matter at all that he still does not know which way to open the door. His grandfather hid him in the woods because people without magic are considered defective and people get rid of them. The police have already found them.
But when Mash defeated the police chief in a duel without any magic, he suggested that the boy enroll in a magical academy, to become the best, to be chosen by God’s providence. That is the highest rank in magical society. Then the society would accept him, or otherwise the police would not leave him alone and neither would the rest of the country. Mash had to agree, hoping for a better future.
Mash passed the entrance exam, even though the deputy director of the academy was very reluctant to admit him and even set him up. On the last exam, the principal helped him because thought the Academy should change its priorities. He took the position because he was concerned about the state of the world, with all the power and authority in the hands of a few self-obsessed people.
